JAMESTOWN — The Salamanca High School girls tennis team sent two doubles teams to the annual Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association championships, concluding the season last week.
Salamanca's top doubles pairing of Maeghan Collins and Ashlyn Newark won their first-round match Friday against a Jamestown team (Madison Smith/Mia Brown), 10-4, in 10-game pro sets. They went on to lose in two sets to the No. 1 seed from Southwestern (Hiba Munir/Elizabeth Kane) in the second round, 6-0, 6-1.
Salamanca's Hannah Klusek and Faith Long lost a first-round doubles match to Frewsburg’s Elise Sposato and Anjolie Sanfilippo, 10-2.
Collins also qualified for the CCAA doubles tournament, held Thursday in Jamestown. Collins lost a first-round match to Olean's Caroline Derose, 10-3.
“Although it was very short and quick, I was happy that we had the chance to even play and get through the season,” Salamanca coach Rich Morton said. “I was happy for our seniors, especially that they were able to get this in, as compared to last spring with our other athletes that missed out.”
Salamanca's scheduled regular season finale match on Monday at Chautauqua Lake on Monday was postponed due to poor weather. The match will either be played Tuesday, or cancelled in the event of another rainout.
