Old Times Remembered for July 17–23

    150 Years

    • July 22, 1875: The ladies of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in Little Valley, will give an ice cream festival on Friday evening of this week (July 23), at Masonic Hall. The proceeds of the festival are to be used for the benefit of the Sunday School of the church. The Sunday School is doing a grand good work in our midst, and we bespeak for it a liberal patronage from our citizens. Let there be a general turnout on Friday evening, that the hearts of the children, teachers and friends of the Sabbath School, may be greatly gladdened and cheered by your presence.
    • July 22, 1875: We are indebted to A.L. Larabee, proprietor of the New Albion factory, for a generous slice of cheese. It is evident that Mr. Larabee knows how to make a fine article of full milk cheese as well as No. 1 creamery.
    • July 22, 1875: Rescue Fire Company No. 1, of Ellicottville, will give a grand complimentary party and dance in Union Hall, in that village, Wednesday evening, July 28th. It will no doubt be a pleasant occasion.

    100 Years

    • July 18, 1925: Next week will be carnival week in Salamanca. The John D. Hughes Post of the American Legion will bring here the Southern Tier Shows, well-known in this section. A merry-go-round, a chair swing and a Ferris wheel promise sport for the kiddies and grown-ups as well. There will be a side show with animals and freaks, and the midway with booths of all kinds.
    • July 21, 1925: (SALAMANCA —) Three matters of particular importance came up at last night’s regular meeting of the city council. They include adoption of a soft drink ordinance designed to give police greater power in controlling the sale of drinks, and prescribing license fees for various classes of businesses dealing in soft drinks. It requires that all persons selling or keeping soft drinks for sale take out a license.

    50 Years

    • July 17, 1975: MU3 Richard Groutt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney W. Grout of 32 Fawn Ave., has left his base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii to serve on the aircraft carrier that is to take part in the recovery of the Apollo astronauts next week following the completion of the Apollo-Soyuz space mission. MU3 Grout is a U.S. Navy musician assigned to the Pacific Fleet and plays drums and percussion.
    • July 18, 1975: LITTLE VALLEY — Patrons of the Rock City Hotel at the turn of the century would still recognize the building, but also would find many evidences of modernization which they might not approve. Neither does the Rock City’s new owner, Andrew J. Duray, who is planning to restore the hotel to its original period setting, just in time for the Nation’s bicentennial and the Village of Little Valley’s centennial.
    • July 23, 1975: Through the efforts of the Salamanca Kiwanis Club, local retired senior citizens can obtain buttons allowing free admittance to the Cattaraugus County Fair. The local Kiwanians, in conjunction with the Olean and Gowanda Kiwanis Clubs, are sponsoring the program for the second year. The three Kiwanis Clubs plan to distribute 1,600 buttons.

    25 Years

    • July 19, 2000: A mule train of troubled youths from ages 12 to 21 is headed to Cattaraugus County and is expected to stay in Little Valley on Friday (July 21). The wagon train left Franklin, Pa. on July 8 and is headed across the state and back, covering 700 to 800 miles over 90 days. The youths go to school Mondays through Fridays, attending classes in open-air tents.
    • July 20, 2000: SALAMANCA — Children participating in the weekly Family Days Tuesday (July 18) got a special surprise when Woodsy the Owl showed up. The plush bird promotes environmental protection and sports a back pack reminding people to, “Give a hoot. Don’t pollute.” He also had plenty of hugs available.
    • July 21, 2000: A new company led by Bradford newspaper publisher John Satterwhite has purchased The Bradford (Pa.) Era, the Olean Times Herald and the Salamanca Press. Satterwhite is president of Bradford Publishing Company, which was formed to purchase the newspaper properties. Also included in the transaction is the Salamanca Pennysaver.

    10 Years

    • July 23, 2015: SALAMANCA — Although relatively young for a historical society, the Salamanca Historical Society celebrates 20 years this summer and 10 years since moving its museum to the former Savings and Loan on Main Street. Now spanning three floors of the former bank building, the Salamanca Historical Museum has grown significantly since its humble beginnings in 1995.
    • July 23, 2015: EAST OTTO — After heavy rains on July 14 left sections of East Otto awash in mud and debris, 4-H members from across Northeast Cattaraugus County pitched in to help residents clean up. East Otto probably suffered the most storm damage of a half-dozen towns hard hit by the thunderstorms that first hit shortly before 6 p.m., and continued into the night.
    • July 23, 2015: SALAMANCA — The city of Salamanca is now several quarters behind in billing for its share of casino revenue payments — as well as the county and school district shares — and Salamanca school in particular has made its grievances known. The last quarter of casino sharing payments received totaled $1,068,284 to the city, $293,941 to the school district and $359,946 to the county, according to the comptroller’s office.
