Salamanca sweeps doubleheader over Oilers with one run wins
SALAMANCA — The Salamanca Lizards won by the scores of 7-6 and 8-7 over the Olean Oilers Saturday in a doubleheader at Veterans Memorial Park.
Leading 7-3 after five innings, Salamanca almost coughed up their lead in the first game after Olean mounted a late comeback attempt. The Oilers scored two runs in the sixth inning and added another in the seventh.
Luckily, pitcher Dylan Novak ended the Olean threat with a pick off at first base to end the game. Novak pitched a complete game, giving up five earned runs and 11 hits. Gavin Lasko went 2-4 with two RBIs to lead the Lizards at the plate.
In the second game, Olean took a 2-0 lead after the top of the second, but four runs in the bottom of the inning gave the Lizards the lead. Olean would score two runs in the fifth inning to get within one run, but never could tie the game as the Lizards finished the long day with another one run win, sweeping the doubleheader between the local teams.
Salamanca native Harley Hoag was 2-4 with two RBIs while Santino Musone was 2-3 with a three-run home run in the second to lead the Lizard batters. Aidan Gruber started on the mound, pitching 4.2 innings while allowing three earned runs and four hits.
Bryce Jackson came on in relief to finish the win with 2.1 innings pitched, also giving up three earned runs and four hits.
As of Tuesday, Salamanca is in last place of the West division with a 4-7-1 record. The Lizards have a game in Olean at 7 p.m. Friday and then return home to face the Hornell Steamers at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
