Dr. Linda Andrei

ITHACA — Dr. Linda Andrei announced her candidacy for Congress in New York’s 23rd District as a Democrat on Monday.

She is one of at least seven candidates in the Democratic party running against Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning.

The campaign began raising funds Dec. 14 and ended its fourth quarter Federal Elections Commission filing totals with $132,000 cash on hand, a campaign spokesman said.

“We need Representatives in Congress who can listen to and act in the best interest of the people in their state and the country,” said Andrei, a retired heart surgeon.

Andrei, in a release, outlined her desire to fix the U.S. healthcare system, protect Medicare and Social Security, and “invest in affordable education for our young people, whether it is vocational or university training” to stir job creation and economic growth.

“Upstate New York needs representatives who understand the priorities of farmers and vintners and who are committed to keeping toxic industries from destroying the natural resources that provide fishing, hunting and other recreational opportunities in our region,” she said.

Andrei attacked Reed as a failure for his constituents, adding he has “aligned himself with an administration that seeks division and confrontation” and noting his support of recent national tax reform that was widely unpopular.

“The same impulse that led me to medicine guides me now to find solutions to heal our broken systems and bring integrity to Congress,” she said.

Andrei is a retired interventional cardiologist who has practiced medicine in the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier regions of New York as well as rural Wisconsin and North Carolina.

She previous was a professor and director of a cardiac catheterization lab in a large public hospital in New York City where she trained. Linda is married to Tim, a Cornell emeritus professor who owns an Ithaca-based cyber security company. They reside in Tompkins County.

Besides a 30-year career in medicine, Andrei is also a successful artist whose work has appeared in galleries from coast-to-coast and Newfoundland.

New York’s 23rd Congressional District includes Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Chemung, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tompkins, Yates, Ontario and Tioga counties.
