150 Years

• July 13, 1876: (SALAMANCA —) About 3 o’clock Tuesday morning (July 11), the alarm of fire was sounded, and many of our citizens arose from their slumbers to witness the burning of two buildings near the Atlantic House, the property of John Mann. Both were used as liquor stores, one being run by John Hammacker and the other by Henry Casey. The fire started in Casey’s store and the other building, being located only a few feet distant, rendered all efforts to save it futile. The property was all heavily insured, the two being covered by $1,000.
• July 13, 1876: SALAMANCA BAND — Monday evening last (July 10), the Cornet Band of this place met with a few citizens, in Flint’s Hall, and re-organized. They passed resolutions to put the Band in the hands of the town, and let the town own all of the Band instruments. They propose to adopt bylaws that will hold each member where he belongs and elect officers from the residents of Salamanca. They say they can and will make a Band that the people of Salamanca will be proud of. The Band wants eighty or a hundred dollars worth of instruments.

100 Years

• July 10, 1926: (SALAMANCA —) A community meeting to consider a project for the establishment of a new park, offering space for a baseball diamond, band stand, picnic ground and playground, in the east end will be held at the People’s M.E. church in that section of the city Sunday evening (July 11). A committee that has been working on the project has part of the property just back of the Highland Avenue school and with a grove on the hillside in view.
• July 13, 1926: (SALAMANCA —) John D. Hughes Post No. 535 American Legion will devote the proceeds from the fair, which will be given here all of next week by the Southern Tier Shows. Proceeds will go toward a community building, a project recently put forward by the Legion. Features offered by the amusement company include Prof. White’s one-ring dog and pony circus and side show of the strange and curious.

50 Years

• July 9, 1976: (SALAMANCA —) The Common Council made a tour of the now closed Fentier Village amusement complex Thursday night (July 8) to hear owner Ned Fenton Jr. tell of some of the possibilities — and some of the problems — of re-opening. Mr. Fenton explained that without the inclined cable car that originally brought visitors up the hill, Parkway Drive would be the logical alternative, but noted that the road is steep.
• July 12, 1976: (SALAMANCA —) Although dark clouds threatened throughout Saturday and Sunday (July 10 and 11), the rains stayed away for the final activities of Salamanca’s American Days bicentennial celebration and the Rotary Club’s annual ice cream social. More than 600 persons were served at the Rotary Club event. More than 200 people participated in the parade.
• July 14, 1976: The Salamanca Fire Commission Tuesday night (July 13) approved the first application of a woman to become a member of the Salamanca Volunteer Fire Dept. The commissioners approved the application of Caroline L. Windsor, 495 Center St., to join the department. Upon completion of fire training, she would be considered a full “fireperson.”

25 Years

• July 9, 2001: SALAMANCA — Starting times are expected to be changed for the 2001-02 school year to prevent younger students from being outside so early — often in the dark — to walk to school or wait for their buses. Included on the agenda for a Tuesday school board meeting is an item to establish a starting time of 8:30 a.m. for Seneca and Prospect elementary students, who this year began their school day at 7:40 a.m.
• July 10, 2001: GREAT VALLEY — A request to reduce the speed limit along Route 219 just south of the town hall was approved by the Great Valley Town Board on Monday (July 9). About 10 residents, mostly those living in or near Creekview Development, said that speeding and a passing zone make it dangerous for them to pull out of their driveway onto Route 219.
• July 12, 2001: SALAMANCA — Music, games and plenty of sunshine Tuesday (July 10) greeted dozens of participants in the first Family Days of the season at Crowley Park. Janet Chisholm of Humphrey, a former music teacher at Prospect Elementary School, played various children’s songs on her guitar and stereo. The first of six summer Family Days events was sponsored by Even Start.

10 Years

• July 14, 2016: SALAMANCA — After more than two years since receiving a special grant, the Pennsy Trail, which runs for nearly two miles in the southern half of the city, is getting a makeover. The work comes following the Seneca Nation of Indians’ receipt of a $482,206 grant from the New York State Department of Transportation. The Nation and City of Salamanca DPWs will be working on site together, getting the trail rehabilitation started this year.
• July 14, 2016: OLEAN — For one alumnus, it had been 71 years since attending Salamanca High School; for another, they had just graduated last year. Altogether, over 150 alumni who graduated from Salamanca, along with some friends and family, gathered July 9 to reminisce about the good old days as the Salamanca High School Alumni Association celebrated its 66th annual reunion.
• July 14, 2016: MACHIAS — The Cattaraugus County Museum will host a six-month exhibit on the Randolph Mammoth beginning this summer, marking the first time in over 80 years the mammoth returns to Cattaraugus County. The mammoth remains were discovered May 19, 1934, when workers were digging a new pond at the State Fish Hatchery in Randolph.
