Henry’s Pressing Issue

Winter needs to end

“That’s like a 40 degree day. Don’t nobody got nothing to say about a 40 degree day.”

During his iconic portrayal of Stringer Bell in “The Wire,” British actor Idris Elba dismissed mediocrity (in this case, related to his drug operation) as a 40 degree day. The metaphor got its point across, but it’s pretty clear at this point that Baltimore winters have nothing on Cattaraugus County.

I understand that it hasn’t been that bad compared to other years. I understand that we really just had a couple of bad weeks this year. But a couple of weeks ago, when we had 40 degree weather every day, it felt like the purest form of ecstasy. I felt like I was walking on sunshine.

Last year, I lived in Arizona, and it’s true, the summer is devastatingly hot. But you can jump into a pool. When it’s cold, and it’s cold all day, all you can do is hide inside and hibernate. I know there are bears in this area, and beyond habitat loss and whatnot, there’s a good reason why you never see them walking around. Until April, expect to see me hibernating in my cave, recharging for a 40 degree day.
