Kellen’s Pressing Issue
Some movie thoughts
I didn’t go see a new movie in theaters last weekend, which is why there is no movie review this week, but that didn’t mean I watched nothing over the last week — just not anything big enough to warrant a whole review on its own.
“Happy Gilmore 2,” the long-awaited sequel to the Adam Sandler golf comedy, hit Netflix recently, and the nearly 30-year wait was not justified. How they made this overstuffed, overly complicated, overly produced piece of milquetoast, corporate slop on a reported $30 million budget — and with an all-star cast of comedians and pro athletes — is just the power of Adam Sandler being such a great guy, I suppose.
“Jaws @ 50” is a documentary on the making of and legacy of Steven Spielberg’s 1975 blockbuster. Sometimes it’s just fun to hear stories about “Jaws” for 88 minutes. The dichotomy between everyone in 1974 and ’75 thinking it’s a disaster and everyone today saying Hollywood would be totally different without Jaws never gets old.
“The Phoenician Scheme” is the latest film from Wes Anderson, and although it’s technically an action/adventure movie (as far as Wes Anderson movies go), it was refreshing to get such a comparatively small, personal movie from him again.
