Kellen’s Pressing Issue
How many have you seen?
A couple of weeks ago, The New York Times released its list of the 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century (so far), compiled from more than 500 directors, actors and other notable names in Hollywood and around the world who cast ballots for their picks of the 10 best movies released since Jan. 1, 2000. For filmheads and cinemasnobs like myself, the list wasn’t that surprising, but there were some interesting entries.
Some of my personal all-time favorites from the past 25 years showed up on the list, such as “Mad Max: Fury Road” at No. 11, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” at No. 22, “Little Miss Sunshine” at No. 63, “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” at No. 76 and “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” at No. 87. Other movies that aren’t necessarily personal favorites but I think of as masterpieces include “No Country for Old Men” at No. 6, “Children of Men” at No. 13 and “Arrival” at No. 29.
Of the 100 movies on the list, I have seen 70, which means 30 others just moved to the top of my watchlist. Some of the top-rated ones I want to see the most include “In the Mood for Love” at No. 4 and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” at No. 16.
