Leon Historical Society to host student volunteers

LEON — The Leon Historical Society is excited to be hosting students from Pine Valley Central School who will be volunteering with the historical society next week.

Society officials said the students were originally going to paint the floor in the gazebo and the steps to the church. With rain in the forecast, the students can help with other projects. Officials said they love the helpful volunteers.

The ongoing saga of the 1836 Church steeple restoration continues. The historical society needs to raise $10,500 to finish the project. The Summer Second Chance Sale held at the 1836 Church is filling up. The public is asked to stop by with proceeds going to the steeple project.

The quilt restoration project is also progressing. The historical society is in the process of ordering a special archival storage box to house the quilt when it is not on display. Deb Milliman has offered to pick up the quilt at the conservators near Albany when it is finished. Officials are anxious to see the completed restoration.

Milliman also reported that 60 Hometown Banners are now hanging around town, and she expects more. If anyone wants to purchase one, contact Milliman.

This summer is a busy season in Leon. The Pennyroyal Race Track presentation is up and on display. Many visitors are enjoying the races, officials reported. The museum is open every Saturday through October from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    Remaining events for 2025 include:

    • July 12 – Civil War Quilt Restoration reveal.

    • July 19 – Pennyroyal Presentation: ‘Race Cars – Jalopies to Hot Rods’ at 2 p.m.

    • Aug. 16 – Leon Town Picnic, featuring the Pennyroyal Race Track at noon. Open to the public. Bring a dish to pass and memories of the racetrack to share.

    • Oct. 11 – Pennyroyal Presentation: ‘Where Some NASCAR Drivers and Winners Actually Started – Driving to Fame’

    • Nov. 11 – Veterans Day ‘Honor Roll Commemoration’

    • Dec. 7 – Community Christmas Program at 2 p.m.

The next Leon Historical Society meeting will be at 6 p.m. Monday, June 23 at the 1836 Church. Those interested in history, who like to have a great time with great people and would like to help make the community shine are invited to join.
