LEON — The Leon Historical Society will host a Mother’s Day Tea at 2 p.m. Saturday at the historical church located at the four corners of Leon along Route 62.
Just in time to celebrate the holiday honoring mothers, the event will include a program by guest speaker Jane Arrance of Randolph who will present “Miss Jane’s Hats.” With a focus on women’s hats of a bygone era, Arrance will feature herself as a fictional character called Jane, as she tells a story about the history of each hat from her own vast collection.
“This is a story of Miss Jane and her wonderful array of hats. It depicts the changing of time along with the hats,” she said. “She’s reminiscing back to the old days starting out in the 1860s during her honeymoon and it progresses with the hats she has worn over the years.”
In part of the storyline, the historical society asks Miss Jane for a hat to put in their auction. A member is trying to pick out a hat, but they all are her favorites. In the end, her favorite hat goes to the fictitious auction and raises money for the organization.
Over the past 50 years, Arrance has amassed a huge collection of antique and vintage clothing pieces from different periods, as well as accessories including hats and purses.
However, she recently sold most of her collection at auction because she felt it was a shame to keep the many precious items in storage where people couldn’t enjoy them.
Arrance said she kept many of the hats for presentations such as the one coming up for the historical society. She currently presents her story about the hats at local churches, libraries and museums.
This event will be a great way for daughters to treat their mothers to an afternoon out in Amish Country. Anyone who wears a hat or brings a friend to the presentation will be entered into a raffle.
A donation of $5 to benefit the Leon Historical Society’s Museum will be appreciated.
