LITTLE VALLEY — The young 4-H girl injured Wednesday morning when she was kicked by her horse in an accident at the Cattaraugus County Fair was treated and released at a Buffalo hospital.
The girl was identified Wednesday night as Katie Riley, but her age, address and parent’s names were not known by fair and 4-H officials.
Kim Kidd, superintendent of the County Fair’s Horse Department, who witnessed the accident, said the horse seemed startled by something before raising its hind leg and kicking. The horse’s rear hock, or leg joint above the hoof struck the girl across the face while she was polishing the horse’s hoofs, causing a cut lip and swelling.
She was wearing a helmet, which may have prevented a more serious injury.
Cattaraugus County Cooperative Extension Executive Director Suzann Cushman said she was trying to contact the girl’s family. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” she said.
Cooperative Extension is still processing the information and paperwork stemming from the accident, Cushman said.
Wednesday was the last day of the 4-H horse shows and horses and owners had left on Thursday, complicating efforts to find out more information about the incident, Cushman said.
