Section 6 releases football schedule; Warriors visit Portville in opener

Section 6 released its football schedule Wednesday night, revealing the opponents for a nine-team Class D division over a seven-week slate.

Section 6 released its football schedule Wednesday night, revealing the opponents for a nine-team Class D division over a seven-week slate.

The nine Class D teams, including newcomers Salamanca and Chautauqua Lake, won’t all play each other; they instead get six league games and one nonleague.

The Warriors begin the 2017 season at Portville Friday, Sept. 1. The matchup will have both teams looking to put the last season (or two) behind them: Portville suffered coach Gary Swetland’s first-ever winless season in 2016, while Paul Haley’s Warriors went 0-7 in the regular season before snapping its losing skid in the consolation bracket against Eden.

The Warriors last played the Panthers in 2004, when both were in Class C. Portville won that meeting, 37-14.

Salamanca doesn’t face Randolph and Chautauqua Lake. The Warriors host Maple Grove Sept. 8 in their home opener at Veterans Park. They finish the year at Class C Gowanda/Pine Valley to continue a longtime rivalry with the Panthers in nonleague play.

Randolph opens the season in Franklinville Sept. 1 to face Franklinville/Ellicottville. Two years ago, Randolph visited Franklinville coming off their third straight New York State Class D championship, when the Titans opened a sectional championship season knocking off the Cardinals. The Cards then return to play Chautauqua Lake Sept. 8 in their home opener. They play Class C Allegany-Limestone for their nonleague game and visit rival Maple Grove Oct. 6.

The Titans have three home games, the opener against Randolph and the season finale against Clymer/Sherman Panama Oct. 13 in Franklinville and hosting Salamanca Sept. 22 in Ellicottville.

Cattaraugus-Little Valley visits Frewsburg in Week 1 and hosts Clymer/Sherman/Panama a week later in its home opener. The T-Wolves don’t play F/E or state finalist Maple Grove and finish the season hosting Randolph Oct. 13 and a week earlier visit their lone nonleague foe, Silver Creek/Forestville.
