RED HOUSE — Allegany State Park is jam-packed with visitors again this Memorial Day Weekend.
“We’re entirely booked for the weekend in both the Red House and Quaker areas,” Jay Bailey, regional park manager, said Friday.
Allegany State Park, the state’s largest state park with 65,000 acres, offers 364 cabins and 321 campsites for both tents and trailers. The rates range from $19, plus a $2.50 administrative fee for a campsite, to cabins beginning at $60 a night.
Park toll booths at Salamanca, Red House, Quaker and Bradford, Pa., entrances will charge admission from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekends starting today. On June 20, weekday vehicle-use fees will be charged, Bailey said. The cost is $7 when there is swimming at Red House or Quaker lakes, and $6 when there is no swimming.
On weekends through June 20, only Red House Beach will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Quaker Beach will open June 20.
“There may not be much swimming this weekend, even though the weather’s going to be pretty warm,” said Bailey, who assumed the regional park manager post in August, succeeding Brad Whitcomb. “The last time I heard, the water temperature in Red House Lake was 61.8 degrees.”
Some park visitors will find new comfort stations near their cabins or campsites, Bailey said.
“We’ve got five new comfort stations,” Bailey said. “We just finished three in Cain Hollow, and there are new ones on McIntosh Trail and Ryan Trail.”
