CALGARY, Alberta — With the Buffalo Bandits in overtime 2,000 miles from home, Jerome Thompson delivered the biggest goal of his rookie season.
The Buffalo rookie scored the winning goal 4:18 into the extra period for a 15-14 victory against the Calgary Roughnecks Saturday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Mark Steenhuis and Joe Resetarits assisted on the winner.
A 2011 draft pick and Iroquois Nationals men’s team member, Thompson made his Bandits debut in this year’s opener and has tallied 12 points (six goals and six assists) in six games, including four goals against Minnesota last Friday. The rookie sits sixth on the team in points and tied for fourth in goals. His .231 shooting percentage is tops among Bandits forwards.
Saturday in Calgary, Ryan Benesch led the Bandits with eight points (six assists). Chad Culp had three goals and three assists.
Anthony Cosmo received the win in his first game in net since being pulled in a loss to Rochester last Saturday, making 44 saves.
Calgary had forced overtime with two goals in the final minutes, including Jeff Shattler’s tying mark with an extra attacker and nine seconds remaining in regulation. Shattler and Daryl Veltman each had three goals for the Roughnecks.
