James R. Freaney Sr.

GREAT VALLEY — James R. Freaney Sr., 79, of Great Valley, died Thursday, March 12, 2026, at home, following a long illness.

Born July 29, 1946, in Olean, he was the son of the late William and Marjorie Frenz Freaney. He was married in Franklinville in 1973 to the former Christine L. Estes, who predeceased him in 2019.

He was a graduate of Salamanca High School, Class of 1964.

James had been employed with the NYS Department of Parks and Recreation at Allegany State Park in their maintenance department for over 35 years.

He was a member of Our Lady of Peace Parish.

He enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening, bowling, playing horseshoes and family outings. He loved taking care of animals, especially dogs, with his late wife. James was a member of the Salamanca Volunteer Fire Company.

Surviving are two sons, James R. Freaney Jr. and Joseph R. Freaney, both of Great Valley; a grandson, Joseph R. Freaney II of Great Valley; a brother, William (Michele) Freaney of Salamanca; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Freaney.

There will be no visitation. A Celebration of Life will be held at the convenience of the family and will be announced.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the O’Rourke & O’Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River St., Salamanca.
