Ellicottville’s comeback falls short in semifinals vs Global Concepts

The Ellicottville Eagles’ (15-8) season came to an end on Tuesday night, as their comeback effort fell just short against Global Concepts (17-4), 56-50.

The sixth-seeded Eagles trailed by 14 points in the third quarter, and battled back to get the game within two possessions against second seeded Global Concepts.

“Unfortunately, we just kind of ran out of time,” said Ellicottville boys basketball coach Dave McCann. “I thought the first half took us a little while to adjust to the speed and their pressure, and they jumped out to a big lead. We composed ourselves late in the first quarter and through the second quarter, and we played with really good energy from the second quarter on.”

Despite the defeat, McCann said he felt that the Eagles’ season was something for all of the players to be proud of.

“It was a really good season overall,” McCann said. “I told them this would be a group we’d remember for their fight. They just never gave up. Time and time again this year, we were down double digits — down late in games — and they just fought and clawed.”

He continued, “It was a really good group of kids. Our seniors were a big part of that. That’s a real tight-knit group we have, and we’re going to miss them. Like I said, there’s nothing to be ashamed of with this season. It gave us a lot of really, really fun moments. I’m just really proud of the kids.”

For the Eagles, junior Blake Smith led the way with 16 points, while junior Rylan Benjamin had 12. For Global Concepts, senior Eric Davis Jr. had 20, while sophomore Jose Castro Jr. scored 18.

Global Concepts will play Westfield on Saturday at Jamestown Community College in the Class C final. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
