Snow ‘on a roll’
Reporter Deb Everts discovered some very unusual objects in her backyard Sunday morning. When she went out to investigate, she saw a bunch of hollow cylinders made of snow that looked like giant rigatoni. The biggest one was 30 inches long and about 11 inches in diameter. She read that they are a rare, cold-weather phenomenon called “snow rollers” caused by the wind peeling the snow under very specific ice, snow and wind conditions. According to the National Weather Service, the delicate snow rollers form when there’s a light dusting of snow, sticky enough to adhere to itself but on a surface it won't cling to. Wind needs to be strong enough to motivate the snow to curl up and form the signature loops of a snow roller, but not too strong to blow the entire structure apart. The NWS said if you ever see snow rollers, appreciate it, because it is so rare and impossible to replicate.
