Kellen’s Pressing Issue

Filmed on location

The old Erie Depot in South Dayton is celebrating its 150th birthday this September. Movie fans know that the Depot was used in two popular Hollywood productions that filmed several scenes in Western New York and Buffalo — 1984’s “The Natural” starring Robert Redford and 1987’s “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” starring Steve Martin and John Candy.

And while not as obvious as New York or Los Angeles — or as popular as Chicago or Atlanta — the Buffalo area has been used for several major movies in the past couple decades. Although the hit Jim Carrey comedy “Bruce Almighty” is set in Buffalo, most of the movie was shot in LA, with only a few outdoor scenes shot near Lake Erie and at Niagara Falls.

John Krasinski’s horror sequel “A Quiet Place: Part II” was filmed for about 50 days in Western New York, including in Akron, Olcott, Dunkirk, Lackawanna and Buffalo. One scene features the South Grand Island Bridge, which was shut down for 13 hours for filming. And Guillermo de Toro’s “Nightmare Alley,” set partially in Buffalo, had outdoor scenes filmed at Niagara Square and Buffalo City Hall, though most of the production was filmed in Toronto.
