Start looking out for potential Oscar darlings
It’s not quite Oscar season, but with the time for the leaves changing colors and the temperature beginning to drop comes the movies that may have a chance for a nomination or two around awards season.
Although September movies aren’t the most likely winners, some of these upcoming releases could have buzz around them as potential technical awardees for production design, cinematography, editing and sound design.
They might not receive the statues come February, but with a lot of big names attached, these movies are probably still worth seeing.
Sept. 12 – ‘Spinal Tap II: The End Continues’
Dir. Rob Reiner; Star. Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer.
Just in time for their 41st big screen anniversary, get ready to turn those dials back up to 11. Rob Reiner returns to direct this sequel to the 1984 cult classic mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap,” with actors Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer returning to their roles as members of the iconic titular band 15 years after a hiatus for a grand finale concert. In addition to the expected hijinks and hilarious commentary on the music industry, legends such as Elton John and Paul McCartney are also set to feature in the film.
Sept. 26 – ‘One Battle After Another’
Dir. Paul Thomas Anderson; Star. Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Regina Hall.
From writer/director P.T. Anderson, “One Battle After Another” follows a group of ex-revolutionaries who, when their evil enemy resurfaces after 16 years, reunite to rescue one of their own’s daughter. The film, which is Anderson’s most expensive film to date, is reportedly a modern update of the Thomas Pynchon novel “Vineland.”
Oct. 3 – ‘The Smashing Machine’
Dir. Benny Safdie; Star. Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Ryan Bader.
The first solo directing effort by Benny Safdie without his brother, Josh, “The Smashing Machine” is a biographical sports drama that follows MMA legend Mark Kerr as he rises to fame while battling intense personal struggles. The film promises a raw, emotional look into the cost of greatness.
Oct. 10 – ‘Tron: Ares’
Dir. Joachim Rønning; Star. Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Jeff Bridges.
In this new installment of the iconic sci-fi series, Ares plays a highly sophisticated AI computer program that crosses over into the human world on a dangerous mission. Though many plot details are still unknown, the setting of “Tron: Ares” seems to focus mostly on the real world rather than the computer world of the Grid that fans remember from “Tron” and “Tron: Legacy.”
Oct. 17 – ‘Frankenstein’
Dir. Guillermo del Toro; Star. Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Oscar Isaac.
Academy Award-winning writer/director Guillermo del Toro gets to bring his long-gestating passion project to the big screen. His version of the classic Mary Shelley novel follows Victor Frankenstein as he pieces together and brings a monster to life. While other important details have not yet been revealed, del Toro originally stated he wanted to create a proper “Miltonian tragedy” out of the story, and with his horror pedigree, this feels like a perfect fit.
Nov. 7 – ‘Predator: Badlands’
Dir. Dan Trachtenberg; Star. Elle Fanning, Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi.
Back for his three of four planned films in the “Predator” series, director Dan Trachtenberg will take audiences to a remote planet in the distant future where a young Predator, outcast from his clan, finds an unlikely ally in android Thia and embarks on a treacherous journey in search of the ultimate adversary.
Nov. 21 – ‘Wicked: For Good’
Dir. Jon M. Chu; Star. Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Goldblum.
Closely following the 2024 theatrical release of “Wicked: Part One,” this second part wraps up the story that follows outcast witch Elphaba as she navigates her identity as the “Wicked Witch of the West” while facing Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, and leading directly into the events of “The Wizard of Oz.”
