Salamanca schools presenting ‘Chicago: Teen Edition’ Wednesday, Thursday
SALAMANCA — The sights and sounds of the Jazz Age and the Roaring Twenties will be present this week at Salamanca High School for a production of “Chicago: Teen Edition.”
The free performances are at 7 p.m. both Wednesday and Thursday in the auditorium.
“Salamanca High School will be filled with glitz, glamour and plenty of razzle-dazzle as students from four area schools present ‘Chicago: Teen Edition,’” said director Brooke Skiba. “The cast features talented performers from Salamanca, Randolph, Ellicottville and Bradford (Pa.) high schools, working together to bring the iconic musical to life.”
Set in 1920s Chicago, wannabe star Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband, Amos, to take the rap… until he finds out he’s been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another “Merry Murderess,” Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the “American Dream” — fame, fortune and acquittal with the help of sleezy lawyer Billy Flynn.
The musical features music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Bob Fosse & Fred Ebb. This teen edition is based on the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins. Fosse directed and choreographed the original 1975 Broadway production, and his style is strongly identified with the show.
“This special student production offers a unique twist on the classic Broadway hit, showcasing young performers’ vocal, dance and acting talents,” Skiba said.
Admission is free, Skiba noted, making it the perfect opportunity for the community to enjoy an evening of high-energy theatre.
“Don’t miss the drama, humor, and unforgettable music that has made Chicago a favorite for decades,” she added.
