150 Years

  • Aug. 12, 1875: A BABY SHOW — It will be seen by the premium list of the Cattaraugus County Agricultural Society, that a new feature is to be introduced at the coming Fair. It is nothing less than a veritable baby show. The show is open to all infants between the ages of five and twenty months, the finest babe to receive a prize of $10; the next best $5. Trot out the babies; the show will make an immense amount of fun if nothing else.
  • Aug. 12, 1875: (SALAMANCA —) Chas. E. Gallagher has rented the building recently used as a billiard hall by S.D. Palmer, and is now fitting it up preparatory to removing his hardware store into it. This will give him sufficient room to accommodate his increasing trade.
  • Aug. 12, 1875: Cattaraugus has built ten dwellings, three stores, a town hall and bank building, and one carriage shop this season, and still the demand for room is so great that it is almost impossible to rent a dwelling or a business place. Other buildings and improvements are in contemplation this season. Can any village in the county show as vigorous and healthy a growth?

100 Years

  • Aug. 10, 1925: (SALAMANCA —) Committees representing the King’s Daughters, Queen’s Daughters, Mothers’ Community Circle adn the Parent-Teacher Association now are engaged in canvassing homes in the city for food stuffs to be donated to the Cattaraugus County Health Camp in Allegany State Park, where 18 Salamanca children adn 106 others form all parts of the county are regaining health and happiness this summer. The health camp is supported by the sale of Christmas Seals and by donations of foodstuffs made by various communities in the county.
  • Aug. 12, 1925: (SALAMANCA —) Steels Consolidated, operating a chain of 5 cent to $1.00 stores throughout the United States, will open a new store in this city Saturday morning (Aug. 15). W.M. Wilkins, president of Steels Consolidated, and John G. Gowans, vice president and general manager of the stores, both of Buffalo, have been here this week to inspect the progress of the work and complete merchandise arrangements.

50 Years

  • Aug. 7, 1975: (SALAMANCA —) At 3:25 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 6) a house and lot stood at 71 Sycamore Ave. At 3:45 p.m. it was just a lot. A contractor’s bulldozer took only twenty minutes to reduce the three-story gray frame building to a four-foot pile of rubble, all in a days’ work during the latest round of demolition in the Salamanca Urban Renewal Agency’s flood recovery project. A total of fourteen houses are slated for razing.
  • Aug. 8, 1975: (SALAMANCA —) An abandoned garage at the corner of River and Chestnut Sts., long considered an eyesore by nearby residents, will soon be replaced with a small park. Stanley Bishop, director of the Salamanca Housing Authority, today announced that the housing authority has purchased the property and intends to begin demolition of the dilapidated structure next week.
  • Aug. 12, 1975: Moving radar has made its debut in Salamanca — to the chagrin of at least sixty-two lead-footed drivers. The MR-7 moving radar unit has been in use by the Salamanca Police Dept. since July 30. Since that time, police have ticketed sixty-two drivers using the unit, an average of five each day.

25 Years

  • Aug. 7, 2000: LITTLE VALLEY — A large crowd Saturday (Aug. 5) enjoyed the annual 4-H animal market sale of animals raised throughout the year for sale. The annual sales for the 112 animals sold totaled $65,994. That compares with 119 animals sold for $57,468 in 1999. In the sale this year were 5 dairy steers, 17 beef steers, 5 goats, 12 lambs and 73 hogs.
  • Aug. 9, 2000: SALAMANCA — Gov. George E. Pataki Tuesday (Aug. 8) announced the city of Salamanca as the recipient of a $400,000 Small Cities Community Development Block Grant and handed Mayor Carmen A. Vecchiarella a simulated check in a special conference in Olean. “I’m really thankful because I believe — especially with the conditions of the last two weeks, the way the rain came down and the storm sewers couldn’t handle it — that this is really a blessing.”
  • Aug. 11, 2000: SALAMANCA — The Person of the Year selected by the Salamanca Area Chamber of Commerce was 10-year-old Kyle Croker. She was honored at a dinner held at Myers Steakhouse on Thursday (Aug. 10). Croker was presented with a crown from last year’s Woman of the Year, Sandy Magiera.

10 Years

  • Aug. 13, 2015: LITTLE VALLEY — The former home of Cattaraugus Cutlery Company was destroyed early Friday morning (Aug. 7) in a fire that brought several county fire departments to the building at the end of Sixth Street in the village. Thirteen fire departments in Cattaraugus County responded to the call shortly after 6:30 a.m., according to Little Valley Fire Chief Kyle Gross. There were no injuries reported in the fire, which is now under investigation by the Cattaraugus County Fire Investigation Team. The blaze gutted the interior of the vacant building and demolition equipment was already on the scene Friday afternoon to level some of what remained standing.
  • Aug. 13, 2015: SALAMANCA — The Salamanca American Legion Hughes-Skiba Post No. 535 honored two past commanders earlier this month in the dedication of its Heron Room. A two-year process, the Legion post dedicated its refurbished quiet room to the late commander who spawned the idea and his father, a past commander as well. “The room is dedicated to the Heron family because Dave Heron was a past commander and his father, George Heron, was also a past commander,” both of whom have passed away, said past Legion Commander Dennis Burger.
