Cattaraugus County Museum to host quilting talk
MACHIAS — The Cattaraugus County Museum’s “Summer at the Stone House” event series continues Thursday, July 10, with a presentation by noted quilt appraiser and educator Linda Hunter.
Titled “Got Scraps? Let’s make Quilts!,” the lecture/demonstration will explore methods for utilizing scraps — often referred to as your stash — including cutting them into helpful sizes, and interesting ways to use scraps in a variety of quilts.

Hunter will show several examples of scrap quilts and also demonstrate how to create some of these quilts. Instruction sheets will be provided for use by your organization. If you have made just one quilt, you have scraps left over from that project. Most quilters know that scraps multiply simply by sitting in their sewing baskets.
Hunter has been involved with quilting in the Western New York area for over 40 years as a quilter, teacher and quilt lecturer, and was a quilt appraiser for 21 years. She is a founding member of the Amherst Quilters Guild in the Buffalo area, which has been operating for over 45 years. Hunter was also co-curator of the exhibit “Quilts: Techniques and Styles” at the Buffalo History Museum and coordinator of the Buffalo History Museum Quilt Project.
The program will begin at 7 p.m. and take place under a tent on the museum lawn, rain or shine. Some seating will be available, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs. This event is free and open to the public.
For those unable to attend in person, the program will be livestreamed on the museum’s YouTube channel. A link to the livestream will be posted on the museum’s Facebook page nearer to the date.
The Cattaraugus County Museum is located in the Stone House, 9824 Route 16 in Machias. For more information, call (716) 353-8200 or visit www.cattco.org/museum.
