Steelers make big addition, trade for Jalen Ramsey
The Pittsburgh Steelers are still making headlines in the offseason. They made a trade with the Dolphins for seven time pro bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey on Monday.
Over a career that has spanned nine seasons, Ramsey is well accomplished. After starting his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he made seven straight pro bowls between 2017-2023. And in a stint with the Los Angeles Rams he won a Super Bowl.
But the Steelers are trading safety Minkah Fitzpatrick back to the Dolphins, who was the team that drafted him. Fitzpatrick has been a special piece to the defensive puzzle, and sending him away will make the safety unit a lot different.
The Steelers have already invested in the secondary this offseason with Darius Slay at cornerback. Slay is another player that has been one of the best corners over the last decade.
The Steelers cornerback room now has three proven players that should give them a better chance against wide receiver Jamarr Chase and other top wideouts in the league. Pittsburgh is clearly hoping that they will get more wins through a strong secondary.
Since the days of Troy Polamalu and Ryan Clark, Pittsburgh hasn’t been the same in the back end of their defense. First round picks have failed over the years, leaving the Steelers to address the unit with middle of the road free agents.
The Steeler defense has been good, consistently ranking high in top defensive categories. But they haven’t been elite, and without a strong offense they need to be elite to make it past the wild card.
The offense has also been revamped. Aaron Rodgers is expected to fill a quarterback role that has been below average since Ben Roethlisberger’s prime.
Former first round running back Najee Harris is with the Chargers, meaning that Jaylen Warren and rookie Kaleb Johnson from Iowa will carry the load.
Also included in the Ramsey trade was tight end Jonnu Smith. This is interesting because Pittsburgh doesn’t need another tight end. Pat Freiermuth has been the mainstay at that position since 2021 when he got drafted. It will be fun to see how Smith is used in Arthur Smith’s offense. Arthur coached Jonnu on Falcons in 2023 when he was a rookie.
One thing’s for certain, the Steelers are making plenty of moves. Hopefully they pay off.
