Aerial mosquito larvicide spraying underway in Cattaraugus County
OLEAN — The Cattaraugus County Health Department announced Wednesday that aerial larvicide spraying has begun this week as part of ongoing mosquito control efforts.
Spraying will be conducted only over wetland areas in municipalities that have opted to participate in the program, which include Allegany, Carrollton, Great Valley, Hinsdale, Olean, Portville and Salamanca, officials reported.
The larvicide application is designed to reduce the mosquito population by targeting larvae before they become biting adults, health department officials said. Spraying operations are expected to be completed by the end of the week, weather permitting.
The department appreciates the public’s patience as crews work to provide some relief from mosquitoes and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
Residents can help prevent mosquito bites and illness through the following recommendations:
- Eliminate standing water around the home — empty buckets, flowerpots, birdbaths and clogged gutters regularly.
- Use insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus when outdoors.
- Wear protective clothing, such as long sleeves, long pants and socks, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
- Ensure window and door screens are intact to keep mosquitoes from entering the home.
- Protect children and infants with mosquito netting and proper repellents suited for their age group.
The Cattaraugus County Health Department remains committed to protecting public health and limiting the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses. Officials said they will continue to monitor mosquito activity and take further action as needed.
