Kellen’s Pressing Issue
If you happened to take a look at the Old Times Remembered section this week, you may have noticed that the 150 years ago portion is missing. No, we didn’t forget to look through those archives for news from that time period — they don’t exist. Or rather, they don’t exist anymore because they weren’t included on our roll of microfilm.
Thankfully, a missing edition has only happened a couple of times since we’ve gone back to the beginning of the paper for Old Times. Whoever decided to save all those old papers long before preservation was a common thing was pretty smart. But now I wonder why this particular week was missing.
Just so we’re not totally out of the loop — on June 19, 1875, the Herzegovinian rebellion against the Ottoman Empire began. It was also the formal opening of the U.S. Marine Hospital at Presidio in San Francisco. On June 20, Othenio Able, the Austrian artist, fossil creator and founder of paleobiology, was born in Vienna, Austria. On June 22 and 23, 1875, the Garonne Flood occurred in France, causing great damage in Verdun and Toulouse, killing about 1,000.
