The event celebrated its sixteenth edition, bringing together more than 15,000 people and further solidifying its status as a leading reference for art and culture in the eastern region of the country.
PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic, Feb. 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — To the rhythm of music, colors, art, and culture, thousands of local and international visitors gathered for the sixteenth edition of the Punta Cana Carnival, an initiative by Grupo Puntacana, held on Saturday, February 22, at the 1st of November Boulevard in The Village Puntacana. Attendees enjoyed an extraordinary display of artistic and cultural attractions from various national and international troupes.
The parade began with the coronation of King Momo, a title awarded this year to the legendary two-time Olympic and world track and field champion Félix Sánchez, widely regarded as the greatest Dominican athlete of all time. Sánchez won gold in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2001 and 2003 World Championships and made history by securing the Dominican Republic’s first Olympic gold medal in Athens 2004, followed by a second triumph in London 2012.
The coronation is one of the most anticipated highlights of the gala, as this honor is bestowed upon outstanding and influential national figures who inspire Dominican society through their achievements while promoting art, culture, and sports. Following his coronation, Sánchez was paraded down the boulevard in a collector’s car, driven by Mr. Frank Rainieri, founder of Grupo Puntacana.
The cultural celebration continued with a spectacular multicolored display of masks and costumes, featuring 54 of the best parade groups and more than 1,500 carnival performers representing Punta Cana, La Vega, Puerto Plata, Santiago, San Francisco de Macorís, Cabarete, Barahona, San Juan de la Maguana, San Cristóbal, Santo Domingo, Cotuí, Baní, Curaçao, and Colombia, among others.
Visitors enjoyed the parade from 20 designated stages, along with 10 free-admission bleachers, in a lively atmosphere filled with live music, food trucks, and entertainment, all within a safe and family-friendly setting. For the first time, the event featured the Craft Bazaar, offering exclusive carnival-themed souvenirs, located at the fourth stage of Galerías Puntacana, The Village Puntacana.
This year, Las Musas of Punta Cana paid tribute to Dominican fruits and the country’s natural richness, celebrating its abundance and diversity. In a vibrant fusion of colors and flavors, The Muses adorned their costumes to represent the Caribbean identity and tradition, featuring elements inspired by pineapple, coconut, papaya, cacao, watermelon, tangerine, mango, banana, guava, dragon fruit, and coffee, creating an explosion of joy and festivity.
