It’s been a quiet week, so let’s take another trip down memory lane with this week in rock history.
Feb. 20, 1970 – The single “Instant Karma!” by The Plastic Ono Band was released. John Lennon wrote, recorded and mixed the track all in one day on Jan. 27, less than a month earlier.
Feb. 21, 1981 – Dolly Parton started a two-week run at No.1 on the charts with “9 to 5,” the singer’s first No.1 hit. It would garner her an Oscar nomination and four Grammy nods.
Feb. 24, 1976 – Eagles’ “Their Greatest Hits” becomes the first album to be certified platinum by the R.I.A.A., meaning 1 million copies sold. Today it’s certified 38 times platinum.
Feb. 25, 1943 – Birthday of The Beatles’ lead guitarist George Harrison, writer of such classics as “Something,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “Here Comes the Sun” and “Taxman.”
Feb. 26, 1983 – Michael Jackson’s Thriller goes to No.1 on the U.S. album chart. The album was one of the first to use music videos as successful promotional tools. It’s since sold 65 million copies.
