SALAMANCA — Donning winter jackets and hats, the Salamanca community gathered on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month to honor those who served to defend their freedoms.
Held in front of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts on Wildwood Avenue, the annual Veterans Day ceremonies Monday featured guest speakers, patriotic music and other traditions with dozens of veterans, current service members and their families and friends in attendance.
Emcee John Haley, Commander of the Salamanca American Legion welcomed everyone and introduced the speakers. American Legion Auxiliary President Darren Fisher, VFW Auxiliary President Lorene Martin, American Legion Riders Director Joel Carrier and VFW Commander Dany Williams each shared some thoughts on the importance of the day, to thank a veteran for their service and what more can be done to support veterans after they serve their country.
Music was played by members of the Salamanca High School band, led by Ramona Lungershausen, with retired Salamanca band director Jon Wilder playing “To the Colors” and “Taps” on solo trumpet.
Legion Chaplain Tom Percy provided the invocation and VFW Auxiliary Chaplin Pat Crater gave the benediction. After the speakers, the veterans’ wreath was thrown into the Allegheny River and the color guard performed the 21-gun salute to honor the fallen.
The day’s ceremony concluded with all in attendance singing “God Bless America,” followed by refreshments inside the Legion and VFW posts.
