When the Jontay Porter news broke, there was a part of me that was surprised, but another that was left completely unfazed given the circumstances. Porter, a currently-suspended player on the NBA’s Toronto Raptors, is being investigated by the league for possibly manipulating the way he played in order to cash bets that he placed on himself. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver recently called this a “cardinal sin.”
Heavy words for sure, but in this day and age, with the rapid legalization of sports betting across the entire country, are we really all that surprised? Several companies and organizations are linking up with sportsbooks or establishing their own. Places like ESPN have segments dedicated to betting. Commercials for DraftKings and Caesars Sportsbook flood TVs across the world. Live odds and moneylines have changed the way people view teams and players.
Now, I am not saying any of these sportsbooks or media outlets are responsible for Porter’s actions in any way, his decision was his own to make. But, when the proposition of making money off sports becomes a daily or hourly conversation, it can not come as a complete shock that cases like these are going to become more common.
