As I was browsing the internet the other day, I came across a fun photo gallery on the Good Housekeeping website called, “Find Out Who the Hollywood ‘It Girl’ Was the Year You Were Born.” I was intrigued, so I clicked through the years for a look back at some of the most talented breakout stars from 1934 to 2015.
The list began with Ginger Rogers, then continued with Bette Davis, Greta Garbo, Katharine Hepburn, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Joan Fontaine, Vivien Leigh, Hedy Lamarr, Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, Joan Crawford, Ava Gardner, Doris Day, Dinah Shore and Sarah Vaughan. Debbie Reynolds was the Hollywood “It Girl” in 1950, the year I was born – now I understand my parent’s decision to name me that.
Debbie was a very popular name back in the ’50s, and there were at least three in each class in school. They were officially Deborah, Debra or Debi. I’m a Deborah, but I go by Debbie or Deb. I have to admit, I didn’t like my formal name of Deborah until the ninth grade when my favorite teacher pointed out the fact that many famous women had my same name.
