May 15, 1873: Rev. Asher Wright, for many years a missionary to the Indians on the Cattaraugus reservation, has completed the translation of the four gospels and the Acts of the apostles in to the Seneca language, and is just receiving the first sheets from the Bible Society in New York, by whom it is published.
May 15, 1873: C.E. Marsh has put a neat soda fountain in his store and will be prepared to supply the thirsty with refreshing soda water during the summer. He makes a good article, and is fountain will be a popular institution.
May 12, 1923: (SALAMANCA —) An explosion that did little damage occurred at the water and light plant on Water street at 11.30 this forenoon, when one of the engines in the plant backfired, blowing out a door int he crank case provided for such emergencies and intended to prevent serious damage to the engine. There was no damage to the machinery and no one was hurt, but several windows were shattered by the force of the explosion. The damage is nominal, amounting to about $25.
May 15, 1923: (SALAMANCA —) Mayor Henry F. McCann is striving to overturn the recent school election, in which most of the candidates whom he supported were defeated. That the mayor contemplated such action was rumored shortly after the election on May 1, but he would neither affirm nor deny the truth of the report.
Yesterday afternoon, however, he causes to be served on the president of the Commission of Education, Miss Carrie A. DeNike, and Clerk G.H. Elliott, formal notice that he would appeal from the result of the election, on the ground that the hours during which the polls were open were not in accordance with the law.
May 11, 1973: Miss Beverlee Sischo of Ellicottville was adjudged Miss Teen in competition among area girls recently at the Jamestown YWCA to represent their community in the 1973 New York State competition of the International Talent and Beauty Pageant.
The pageant will be held at Ithaca College June 25-29.
Miss Sischo, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Sischo of Maples Rd., Ellicottville, presented a medley of piano selections including “The Man I Love”, “Cumana” and “Bumble Boogie” to win- the title, based on talent, poise, personality and beauty.
May 12, 1973: WEST VALLEY — the Nuclear Fuels Services Inc. plant here has handed out layoff notices for fifty-six employees effective this month, the second layoff within a year, leaving only sixty of the original 190 employes a year ago, it was reported Friday.
The company has indicated that delay in a $50 million expansion program at the plant, which will be held up for several years due to stiffened policies of the Atomic Energy Commission, has forced the big layoffs.
May 13, 1998: LITTLE VALLEY — The Cattaraugus-Little Valley Annexation Study Committee has placed suggestion boxes throughout both villages to give people an opportunity to air their views on the proposed school reorganization.
The committee is analyzing a possible annexation of Little Valley Central School by the Cattaraugus Central School sometime in 1999 with a public vote scheduled for late July.
May 14, 1998: OLEAN — Salamanca’s Caboose Lady was honored for her personal dedication to tourism promotion efforts in the county on Wednesday (May 13) at the Tourism Promotion Agency’s annual dinner.
Judy Emke, office manager for the Salamanca Area Chamber of Commerce, received the Louie Award, named in memory of Louis L. Marra. The ward was voted on by the directors of the TPA, but the winner remained a secret until last night.
May 16, 1998: CATTARAUGUS — The Cattaraugus Historical Society on Friday (May 15) received a valuable gift — a complete inventory stored on computer disk.
The inventory was designed by Lydia Broughton-Wilder, a ninth grader at Cattaraugus Central School. She started the inventory last July and finished the final data entries in April.
May 16, 2013: SALAMANCA — The Falling Leaves Festival will have a new home this autumn.
The Seneca Salamanca Chamber of Commerce recently announced the festival will take place this year at Allegany State Park, marking the first time in its 36-year history the festival will be hosted outside of the city.
“Essentially, it’s like picking it up, keeping it almost as is and dropping it at the state park,” said Jenny Ingrao, director of membership and events at the chamber.
May 16, 2013: SALAMANCA — The decision by the Seneca Salamanca Chamber of Commerce to move the city’s Falling Leaves Festival to Allegany State Park in 2013 has already been met with opposition from a key festival vendor.
Ross Ledsome, a Salamanca resident who operates Rossi’s Foods, has publicly stated his opposition to the festival’s move. Ledsome manages a food stand at various area festivals and said he has been in attendance at every Falling Leaves Festival since its creation in 1976.
“For me, it’s trying to change tradition,” he said. “Being one of the first vendors, I’m very protective of it.”
