CATTARAUGUS — The Cattaraugus Free Library was recently named an “Honorable Mention” for the 2020 Joseph F. Shubert Library Excellence Award.
The award is given annually to recognize the achievements of small, medium and large libraries in the state, according to the New York State Regents Advisory Council on Libraries. The award honors libraries that have taken significant steps within the past two years to improve the quality of library service to users.
State librarian Lauren Moore announced that the Nyack Library was selected as the winner for its Black American Culture & Arts Series: The Legacy of Toni Morrison.
“This year’s pool of candidates presented the Committee with a difficult challenge — how to pick from an array of quality projects,” she said. “While we are pleased to honor Nyack Library with this award, we felt we must recognize two other participants with Honorable Mentions.”
Under extremely challenging operating conditions, the Cattaraugus Free Library’s new director, along with board and staff, increased book and DVD circulation and patron usage of the library by 100%, Moore said.
A date for the “Libraries Transforming Communities” meeting has been set for 3 p.m. Friday, May 7 at the Roberts Memorial Methodist Church outdoor pavilion. Library Director Lori Antholzner said guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs. Light refreshments will be provided.
Community members are invited to join in the discussion of what can be done to revitalize the village of Cattaraugus, including what the village’s top priority should be. Antholzner said she has been researching various options and will provide information at the event.
In this 60-minute discussion, library staff and local and state officials, including George Borrello, will be present to listen to ideas.
This event is offered as part of Libraries Transforming Communities: Focus on Small and Rural Libraries, an initiative of the American Library Association in collaboration with the Association for Rural & Small Libraries.
