RED HOUSE — The 2019 New York State budget contains more than $2.5 million for several projects in Allegany State Park, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced this week.
“State parks are central to New York’s thriving tourism economy and millions of New Yorkers turn to these world-class natural treasures each year for fun, exercise and community engagement,” Cuomo said. “This significant investment will help enhance and modernize our cherished State Parks while promoting healthy outdoor recreation, preserving our environment and lifting up local economies.”
A $1.5 million appropriation for improvements in the Quaker Facility Building tops the list.
Also, a project to upgrade the Red House high voltage electrical system has been funded for $875,000. A third big project is $200,000 to renovate the Quaker Multi-Use Trail.
Last month a $10,625 grant was announced to Friends of Allegany State Park for their efforts to renovate the historic Red House sawmill that was used to produce lumber for cabins and other structures in the park. The first phase includes securing, stabilizing and sanitizing the structure.
The Allegany Region has been allotted an additional $350,000 for continuing Midway State Park improvements and $75,000 to upgrade utilities at Lake Erie State Park.
The local projects are part of $110 million in capital funding in the State Parks budget this year.
