Only one other county in New York state had a worse unemployment rate in June than Allegany County, while Cattaraugus County also ranked among the worse rates for counties.
Allegany County’s unemployment rate of 5.9 percent was only surpassed by St. Lawrence County, at 6 percent, according to New York State Department of Labor. However, Allegany County’s June figure was an improvement over June 2017, when 6.8 percent unemployment was reported.
In Cattaraugus County, June unemployment was 5.1 percent, down from 5.7 percent in June 2017.
New York state’s private sector job count rose by 15,000 in June, or 0.2 percent, to 8,185,900, a new, all-time employment high, according to figures released by the Department of Labor.
The statewide unemployment rate, boosted by seasonal hires, was unchanged at 4.5 percent in June. This unemployment rate matches the state’s lowest level since June 2007.
In addition, the number of unemployed New Yorkers fell in June, from 437,500 to 430,500, reaching its lowest level since May 2007.
The state’s private sector job count is based on a payroll survey of 18,000 New York employers conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The U.S. unemployment rate in June was a reported 4.2 percent.
