SALAMANCA — A Salamanca resident believes she was robbed after a man gained access to her home by posing as a local cable company employee.
On Monday, May 7, a man in a truck claiming to be from Atlantic Broadband entered the home of a Salamanca woman. She alleges the man stole money from inside her residence.
“She asked if he was from the cable company, he said yes, went into her home and had her go outside,” said Lt. Tina Owens, inspector with the Salamanca Police Department.
According to Lt. Owens, the man was not an employee of Atlantic Broadband. She said the company did not have any employees in the area at that time.
Lt. Owens said although the woman called Atlantic Broadband, an employee was not sent to her home because the issue wasn’t specific to the woman’s cable.
“She said she had an issue with her cable, but it was an area-wide cable issue,” she said. “There were no trucks. There were no service calls.”
The woman said the man left a phone number behind, but Lt. Owens said the police have not been able to make any contact using that phone number.
“We don’t have a list of suspects at this time,” she said. “We have advised her on what she needs to do to take extra precautions and we’ve put her in contact with the crime board.”
Police encourage area residents having work done with their cable to always ask for credentials and identification.
If residents have any suspicions, the police recommend not granting anyone access to their homes and immediately calling 911.
Anyone with information about the incident are asked to contact Salamanca Police at 945-2330 or 945-2331.
