Tristen Gillette, Football
Senior fullback Tristen Gillette scored his first two touchdowns of the season in the Salamanca varsity football team’s Week 8 victory at Maple Grove.
Gillette finished with a career-high 74 yards, including a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs, helping the Warriors come back to beat the Red Dragons on a last-minute field goal, 23-21. Gillette also made six tackles playing linebacker.
The Warriors (4-4) hope for similar success this week as they return to Maple Grove for a Section 6 Class D semifinal playoff game.
Haley Pond, Girls Tennis
Senior co-captain Haley Pond recently wrapped up her girls tennis season after playing second singles this fall for coach Rich Morton’s team. Pond finished the year with three victories, and Morton noted most of her matches were close and many went to three sets this season.
Pond and classmate Nora Warrior played in the CCAA doubles tournament, winning their first match to reach the quarterfinals before falling to the top team from Olean.
Aly Hill, Girls Soccer
With the season on the line, junior co-captain Aly Hill stepped up with two goals for the Salamanca girls soccer team in the Section 6 Class C playoffs. Salamanca fell, 4-2, to Westfield on Wednesday, Oct. 17, but Hill scored twice on assists from Rachel Chamberlain and Marla Warrior.
Hill finished the season with a team-high eight goals as the Warriors went 5-12, a four-win improvement from last season.
Quiana Stevens, Girls Volleyball
Quiana Stevens has helped lead the Salamanca volleyball team to a pair of victories over New Life Christian this season. On Friday, for the Warriors’ second win of the season, she marked five aces, 10 kills, six assists and 19 digs. Previously she had 15 aces, nine kills and a block in the team’s first meeting with New Life.
She now has 63 kills, 15 assists, 90 digs, 16 blocks and 43 aces on the season. A captain and all-around player, Stevens earned praise from coach Brandy Kinney as a leader who “plays with tenacity and no complaint, inspiring her team at every turn.”
