MACHIAS — A tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children led to multiple felony sex charges against a Machias man Tuesday.

New York State Police announced Wednesday that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children informed troopers of possible criminal activity, leading them to execute a search warrant at the home of Robert Scott Donovan, 47, of Machias.

Following the search and investigation, Donovan was charged with second-degree criminal sex act, first-degree disseminating indecent material to a minor and promoting a sexual performance by a child, all class D felonies; third-degree rape and third-degree criminal sex act, both class E felonies; first-degree unlawfully dealing with a child and endangering the welfare of a child, both class A misdemeanors; and fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a class B misdemeanor.

Donovan was processed at Machias-based state police barracks and arraigned in Machias Town Court, where he was ordered to be held on bail in Cattaraugus County Jail.
